There was supposed to be a weekend seminar held at this Benedictine monastery here in Germany about Thomas Merton which I was excited about and signed up for. It was called off because of lack of participants.
There have been some articles published recently that are very damaging. They put him in a new frame, much different than the one he was in in the 40s and 50s.
Merton's book "Seven Story Mountain" was a blockbuster when it came out. It was autobiographical but gave some insight into the life of a monk once he entered the monastery.

He did a lot to open up our understanding for other religions.

I wish he had kept on the same spiritual track as in the beginning. Her turned activist and got into politics.
