"Merton was above all a man of prayer, a thinker who challenged the certitudes of his time and opened new horizons for souls and for the Church. He was also a man of dialogue, a promoter of peace between peoples and religions."

Merton's writings have always guided me but I especially like his poetry.
I have listened to his lectures to his novices. He gave them good healthy advice and kept them from romanticizing the Trappist life.
There were those who thought the CIA was on his trail because of his political stance concerning the ending of the war in Vietnam.
I like that prayer of Merton's: "My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me--" because it seems to say exactly how I feel.
